Lawrence County Marriage Licenses
Marriage licenses in Lawrence County are issued by the Lawrence County Recorder of Deeds, not by the Circuit Clerk. The Recorder of Deeds is Denise Massie. The office is tied to the Historic Courthouse records function and may be reached by phone at 417-466-2670, by general email at recorder@lawrencecountymo.gov, or by document request email at recordrequest@lawrencecountymo.gov. The Recorder lists the mailing address as P.O. Box 449, Mount Vernon, MO 65712. That office also keeps recorded instruments, land records, and certified marriage copies, so it is the first stop for Lawrence County marriage records.
The Recorder requires couples to call for an appointment and complete the online marriage application before they arrive. Both parties must appear in person at the Recorder's Office in the Historic Courthouse. Licenses are issued Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Applicants must be at least 18. Missouri law bars marriage between blood relatives down to and including first cousins. The county does not distinguish residents from nonresidents for license use, and a valid Lawrence County license may be used anywhere in Missouri for 30 days from the date it is issued.
The Recorder's online search source is shown in the manifest as Lawrence County iCounty records access.
This image supports the marriage-record lookup path because recorded marriage documents and certified marriage-copy requests route through the Recorder, not the court clerk.
Apply for Lawrence County Marriage Records
The county's application workflow has two parts: online preparation and an in-person appointment. A couple should not treat the online form as a complete license by itself. The Recorder still requires both applicants to appear, prove identity, sign the affidavit, and pay the nonrefundable license fee before the license is issued. The county accepts a driver's license, passport, or visa for identity.
- Call the Lawrence County Recorder of Deeds at 417-466-2670 to make the marriage-license appointment.
- Complete the application at marriage.icounty.com before arrival, using full legal names and current personal details.
- Both applicants appear in person at the Recorder's Office with an accepted photo ID.
- Provide the required application details, including birth date, Social Security number when applicable, race, education level, and the date any last marriage ended.
- Sign the affidavit that the information is true and pay the license fee by cash, check, or card.
- After the ceremony, give the license to the officiant so the officiant and two witnesses can complete it.
- Make sure the completed license is returned to the Recorder within 15 days after the wedding for permanent recording.
The manifest includes the official Recorder-linked marriage application portal.
The application portal is only one part of the process; the in-person Recorder appointment is still required before a Lawrence County marriage license is issued.
Lawrence County Marriage Application Fields
Marriage application data is more exact than a simple name search. The Recorder uses identity details to issue the license and to create the later recorded marriage file. Applicants should use their full legal names and bring identification that matches the application. If either applicant was married before, the date the last marriage ended is part of the county's listed application information.

Lawrence County Marriage Divorce Fees
Fees differ by office because marriage licenses are Recorder records and divorce decrees are court records. The Recorder charges the license and certified marriage-copy fees. Dissolution filing fees and decree copies are handled through the Circuit Clerk. Card use for a marriage license carries a small technology charge, while court copy costs use the court's copy and certification schedule.
| Item | Amount | Office |
|---|---|---|
| Marriage license | $46, nonrefundable | Recorder of Deeds |
| Certified marriage license copy | $9 | Recorder of Deeds |
| Credit card technology fee for marriage license | $2 | Recorder of Deeds |

| Modification filing | $100.50 | Circuit Clerk |
| Court copy page | $0.25 per page | Circuit Clerk |

Search Lawrence County Marriage Records
Recorded marriage documents and certified marriage copies should be requested from the Recorder of Deeds. The Recorder's office provides an online record search through iCounty, and the office separately lists recordrequest@lawrencecountymo.gov for document requests. A request should use the names used at the time of marriage, the approximate date, and any book, page, or instrument detail found through the index. The Recorder also notes that office staff can assist with searching records, but the office does not perform title or lien searches for users.
Missouri's state vital-record office is a different channel. The Missouri Bureau of Vital Records maintains marriage and divorce statements for events reported since July 1, 1948, but those statements are not the same as the county's certified marriage license copy. Certified county marriage copies for Lawrence County are Recorder records. People who need a legal proof of the local marriage should use the Recorder's certified copy process rather than assuming a state statement will satisfy every purpose.
The manifest source for Missouri's vital-record overview is the Missouri Bureau of Vital Records page.
The state page is useful for statements, but Lawrence County marriage records with the local certified copy come from the Recorder of Deeds.
Find Lawrence County Divorce Records
Divorce records are court records. In Lawrence County, divorce and dissolution files are handled by the Circuit Clerk, and the contact page routes Circuit Civil and Dissolutions to phone option 3. A divorce decree is the court order that ends the marriage and sets out the court's terms. A state divorce statement is narrower. Missouri DHSS says a Certified Statement Relating to Divorce includes the spouses' names, the date of divorce, and the county where the divorce was recorded. The actual certified decree must be obtained from the Circuit Clerk in the county where the decree was granted.
Dissolution case records may be found through public Case.net if the case is public and available through the Missouri court system. If the online record does not show the document, if an older file is needed, or if a certified decree is required, the Circuit Clerk's records request process is the better channel. Sensitive family details, minor-related content, and sealed filings may not be available as open public material.
The state ordering distinction is shown in the manifest through Missouri's vital-record ordering page.
That distinction keeps requesters from ordering a state statement when a court-certified Lawrence County divorce decree is the needed record.
Lawrence County Divorce Filing Basics
A dissolution filing begins in Circuit Court. RSMo 452.310 requires a dissolution petition to allege that the marriage is irretrievably broken and to include items such as residence details, county residence length, marriage date, marriage place, where the marriage was registered, and the separation date. The Circuit Clerk links family-law forms through the court forms page for self-represented parties, but the clerk cannot give legal advice.
For public access after filing, the same court-record channels apply. Case.net may show public docket entries, parties, judgments, and charges or claims when public and automated. The Circuit Clerk record request form is used when a requester needs a specific decree, a raised or electronic certified seal, or a copy not available through remote public access. A photo ID may be required for confidential records.
The manifest includes Missouri's dissolution petition statute as a source for divorce filing requirements.
The statute source helps separate the court filing requirements from the later copy request for a Lawrence County divorce decree.
Certified Lawrence County Copies
Certified copies follow the office that owns the record. For a certified marriage license copy, contact the Recorder of Deeds. For a certified divorce decree, contact the Circuit Clerk. For a state marriage or divorce statement, use DHSS only when that limited statement is the right document. The Lawrence County Circuit Clerk record request form asks whether the records should be certified and, if so, whether a raised certified seal or electronic certified seal is requested.
Copy requests work best when the requester supplies names as they appeared at filing, the case number if known, the filing or disposition year, and the exact document needed. Court copy fees are determined after copies are made, must be paid before records are sent, and may include page costs, certification, postage, redaction copy fees, and clerk-time search fees. Court record processing may take 5 to 10 business days.
